Critical Role Campaign 4 Reveals the Fighters Party
From the very beginning of Campaign 4, fresh DM Brennan Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with deep backstory, a wide array of heroes, and a gripping narrative featuring divine entities, demons, and dark forces increasing in strength within the urban setting.
Warning: Spoilers for the latest installment of this adventure follow below.
The Combat-Oriented Party Unveiled
Episode 3 ended with a dramatic pause and introduced the initial group of adventurers who will separate from the primary party to undertake their own adventure, distinct from the other two tables.
This warrior group includes the determined fighter (brought to life by the voice actor), the nimble rogue (the talented performer), Tyranny (the cast member), the cleric (Sam Riegel), and the mysterious adventurer (the actor).
The Reason for Division
With an extensive roster, it was clear from the start that maintaining everyone at a single group would be unfeasible.
Hence, the first four episodes of this story serve as an Overture, intertwining the characters’ stories before branching into three smaller tables: Warriors, Planners, and Explorers.
The Nature of the Warrior Group
According to the Dungeon Master, the Soldiers table is for players who enjoy a classically intense battle-oriented story mode where diplomatic options are few and far between.
Initially, figures such as the hesitant healer Wicander Halovar might look unsuited, but the events of episode 3 show why these particular heroes are ideally matched for the combat party.
Reasons to Leave
For one thing, the party has a clear idea where to head next after a brutal first encounter with The Crow Keepers.
Casimir of Thjazi Fang—whose demise initiated the story’s plot—used the enemy for his personal gain, entering the secret base, striking the character, and stealing all the enchanted items to dispose of.
The antagonist then cleared his debts and ran away to a fortified location in the northern region, beyond Dol-Makjar, with Cyd Pridesire hot on his heels.
Personal Motivations
Secondly, each adventurer has a individual motive to depart the metropolitan area:
- The agile hero, as the companion and best friend, seeks vengeance.
- The knowledgeable figure is familiar with the northern area and advises that it is a dangerous environment.
- The warrior and The healer, having defied his house’s orders to kill the fighter and instead freed him, have no other options.
- But, their status as important members in the influential clan could enable the party reach places they usually can’t.
- Furthermore, The fighter swore a eternal obligation to The cleric for his salvation and will now follow him everywhere.
Wanted and Hunted
Lastly, all of them are wanted by the authorities that control the setting for a multiple motives, making remaining behind dangerous:
- Thimble and The character are known criminals.
- Tyranny and Wicander turned against the powerful family and the army of fiends they are partnered with.
- The fighter is marked for death by House Halovar.
This leaves them few options but to head to the remote area in quest for the antagonist.
Future Episodes
According to the latest episode’s follow-up content, we discover that the Soldiers table will be absent next week, leaving the other eight players to form the Questers and Strategists groups.
Viewers can anticipate finding out which adventurers will be assigned to which table in the story’s last Overture episode, available to watch on next week.
