Government Official States MoD Investigating Security Risk from Vehicles from China, as Staff Advised to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.
A defense official has confirmed that the MoD is currently looking into the possible security risks posed by Chinese vehicles, while staff have been instructed to refrain from discussing secret information in any cars.
Security Guidance for MoD Personnel
During a recent interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to talk about secret information while travelling in China-made vehicles.
The minister explained that the ministry is “investigating” cars from China within its vehicle pools, however emphasised that security is a issue in all modern cars.
Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a very small number.
However whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug MoD devices into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a secret classification in any kind of vehicle, because of the growing threats of eavesdropping that are present in all automobile, to only have those confidential talks in secure locations. That’s a wise and sensible thing for everyone worried about security.
When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to stop using all cars from China, Pollard replied: ‘That’s exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Broader Security Context
This announcement comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the UK to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could enable China to disable public transport and cause disruption to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel has been directing laser beams at RAF pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.
The broader defence environment underscores the significance of strong measures and vigilance in all aspects of official operations, from vehicle usage to communication habits.
