No fewer than 13 people lose their lives and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's key public works projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” declared the country's president.

The official reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in national works. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, beating expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked ongoing questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party called for an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
