Revitalized Daniil Medvedev Wins First Championship in Over Two Years
19 of Daniil Medvedev's 21 victories have been achieved on hard courts
A revitalized Daniil Medvedev claimed his initial trophy for nearly 30 months with victory over Corentin Moutet in the competition championship match.
Medvedev, a former top-ranked player, has endured a challenging season, winning just one match at the major tournaments and suffering a meltdown at the US Open.
Medvedev's varied form on the tennis tour - and issues with his service game in particular - caused him falling of the elite rankings and finally splitting with long-term coach Cervara.
Now training with his coach and Goetzke, he has gradually progressed in the last few weeks - culminating in a hard-fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 victory over Frenchman Moutet.
This represents the player's maiden title since the Rome competition and initial on a hard surface from spring of the previous year.
Victory also indicates the Russian has won twenty-one victories at twenty-one various tournaments.
"For the first time I am participating in a event with my two daughters at once, so to win a championship is especially meaningful," said world number 14 the champion.
"This championship is in dedication of my younger daughter Victoria, because the initial championship I got when my older daughter her name was born was for her."
The athlete, the 2021 US Open champion, had been defeated in his previous six title deciders, including in that event in the past months.
His retrieving approach and frequent emotional displays on court had led some to doubt if his skill to play at the highest level was concluded.
Yet the athlete has made changes in recent weeks, attempting to come to the net and play positively, supported by an better serve.
Medvedev recovered from a deficit in the first set against the difficult Moutet, taking 4 of the last five points to gain the advantage.
The pair swapped breaks in the following set before the challenger, bidding for his maiden ATP Tour championship, took control to create a third set.
He rescued 4 initial opportunities in a tight deciding set before Medvedev won the break to that score to secure the win.
Suitably, the winner secured the title with a rally at the net area, with his opponent failing to control a shot after over two and a half hours.
